Surrender: Step 3
Made a decision to turn our will and loves over to the care of God as we understood him.
Now we are called on to reform all our thinking — to make a complete and final surrender of all our littleness, fears, doubts, and uncertainties to that great something within us that is calm and certain and sure. ~Ernest Holmes
“The more we become willing to depend upon a Higher Power, the more independent we actually are.” ~Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions
The word “surrender” had a subtle tinge of weakness for me at first – but when I examine it through the concept of duality I realize there has to be a quality of strength somewhere in there too. The passive concept of surrender feels like weakness, submission. The strength, however, comes through my conscious intention and decisive action to hand off my problems, fears and limitations to the care of God as I understood It, that great something within (and throughout) …
If I can align with the ever-awakening highest knowing part of myself – my Higher Power – and hand off my attachment to specific outcomes, actively surrendering my “littleness, fears, doubts, and uncertainties” therein would be the strength.
I was on to something, this I knew. The big question was how to do it?
One suggestion given to me in one of my earliest AA meetings was to simply say the words in the 3rd Step Prayer over and over, even if they didn’t make sense, until they did. The only words that made any sense at first was the phrase “bondage of self” which seemed illuminated on the page and reminded me of what I had been hearing in Science of Mind for a decade.
So I re-wrote the 3rd Step Prayer in my own words, borrowing from Ernest Holmes, fully believing that Bill W would approve.
The original as in the Big Book:
God, I offer myself to Thee — to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!
I say this version: 3rd Step Prayer – SOM Style
God I embody and express as you. I am relieved of the bondage of self as I step into a freer, fuller expression of life. I stay connected, aligned and attuned to my Higher Power Consciousness as I walk through my difficulties, always mindful of their gifts and their potential for good, growth, and positive outcome. I express from my Highest Self always so others may be inspired to realize their own power, love, and way of life as a spiritual being.
This is a continuous ongoing action step for me and a vitally important one because I still often default toward self will, self directing. The difference is now I am so very willing to align with my Higher Power as soon as I notice. I love the independence I feel as a result of accessing that great something within me that is calm and certain and sure at all times.
• Do you ever re-write affirmations, prayers, or verses so that they speak to you more clearly and make more sense?
• Are you able to substitute more meaningful words when you notice that specific words or concepts have a negative charge for you?
