“We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experiences can benefit others. The feeling of uselessness and self pity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook on life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.”

~Bill Wilson, from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

“There is a power for good in the Universe, greater than you are, and you can use it.”

~Ernest Holmes

I jump off a tall platform; I go boom. I touch a hot stove; ouch, I burn and blister. Every time. I trust these physical laws of nature to work–no need for me to test them repeatedly.

Historically, it’s been easier for me to buy into these physical promises than to trust the universal ones that say if I live by certain principles, certain outcomes will follow. Even more difficult for me was the notion that positive outcomes are subject to these promises just as much as negative ones; just that the negative ones felt so much more familiar to me.

Not anymore.

Now I know that the promises outlined above, taken from the Big Book, are just as certain to take place as the promises of gravity and thermodynamics.

For me, The Promises started showing themselves almost immediately. Once I made the absolute decision to no longer dilute my problems with alcohol, or attempt to solve them armed with the illusion of liquid courage, the shift was almost instantaneous.

Of course there was a learning curve and a growing curve that continues to this day, but the amazement, realization, and transformation started to bubble up at once.

Perhaps it’s the Science of Mind-like affirmative declaration of these Big Book Promises that resonates with me. The only difference is the tense. Science of Mind speaks in the present tense, affirming this already is happening. The Promises say these things will happen… but still.

As a scientific mind treatment, The Promises might read more like this:

There is one Highest Power that penetrates and permeates all of the inner and outer spaces of the Universe, including deeply within me. I know intuitively that I am one with It. I stand in amazement and full acknowledgement of a deeper sense of freedom and happiness. Through the gift of hindsight I recognize that Divine wisdom has always been in play as I cast a kind glance over my past. I am grateful for absolutely everything in my life up to this point that brings me to this moment. I comprehend the word serenity and I know peace. I let my light shine on others and I create a beneficial connection with all. I am proud to be a positive presence in the Universe. I seek opportunities to connect with and support others. I know abundance in my relationships and in my finances. I take decisive action with confidence and clarity to attain perfect outcome. With gratitude I know that I am aligned with the universal energy of spirit, and I co-create my life in new, more powerful ways than ever before. I release my word to the law knowing this life is my life now.

And so it is…

  • Are the promises continually coming true for you?
  • What are some of the amazing things that have come to pass for you as you stay true to yourself, true to the higher power that is you, and true to living from a higher order of being?

In gratitude, harmony and support,

Promises, Promises
