Change the Channel, Change Your Life

 

 

For some reason, cable companies seem to think having 200+ channels is a selling point. But I can only watch one at a time. No matter how many there are to choose from, I’ll only see on my screen what my tuner is set to in that moment.

This great TV analogy always helps me grasp that it’s how I tune my focus and my thinking that determines what scenes, images, and experiences play out on the screen of my life. And if I notice that I’m no longer enjoying what’s in front of me, I can change it. But I’m the one that has to consciously change the channel and select something different to tune in to.

These days I can’t seem to help being drawn to cable news and politics. It’s probably not the healthiest thing as a steady diet, but it’s so provoking and blood boiling it’s my go-to. But it can be a bad habit. I have to be prepared to change the channel once it goes beyond the day’s stranger-than-fiction headlines into the panels of pundits yelling over each other. If I’m not aware, I can take in and project my agitation out into the world.

Learning how to wake up and let the good stuff in by focusing mostly on the good stuff allows me to even indulge in cable news without filling with despair. It is unquestionably through my recovery work in and out of the rooms that continues to teach me to tune my thoughts to a higher level of thinking. These days my life’s broadcast is of a much higher quality. The dramatic story lines don’t pull me in like they once did – I stand guard at the portal of my mind and more easily remember to close the door when I’ve had enough.

Stand guard at those portals. You wouldn’t just keep your doors open wide and let just anyone and everyone wander in uninvited and take over your space. In your dwelling or your consciousness, don’t allow negativity to make itself at home.

    Great read. Thanks Lena. I remember simpler times, Channels 2-13 and the TV stations actually signed out at some late hour. And we had to get up and go to the TV to change the channel. Our TV channels today are a reflection of today’s times. Too much and never shuts down. Thanks for this reminder to change our channel when I need to. Or shut the TV off? Love you Lena!
