At various points in the past I was in that weak “why me” place? Why did I have to be the one that goes too far and makes the bigger fool of myself? Why did I have to be the one to hurl one more, and one louder, smartass comeback than the other? Why do I have to be the one that can’t remember what happened after that? Why can’t I get addicted to yoga or steamed vegetables? When I finally realized the time had come to plug the jug once and for all, the luminosity of the spiritual light I had been dancing around for a decade came flooding in through that first crack of awareness, acknowledgement, and acceptance. Several years ago at my recovery meeting the topic of discussion turned to prayer. It’s a hot button issue to people who are willing to start a minor skirmish over God and the definition thereof. In order to deeply transform your spirit in addiction recovery, you have to also include balance in the equation. Meaning that you must treat the whole person and all aspects of your health, and all aspects of your life. If you zero in on spiritual practices alone then you may find that you have lost the forest for the trees. Meaning that you can get so laser focused on one aspect of your health that you neglect the other areas to the point that it causes you to relapse. I have watched this happen over and over again among my peers so I have taken measures to insure that I do not suffer the same fate.

If somebody in your life tells you that they have quit drinking – whether for good, or for a few months – they have already soul-searched, agonised, researched, and thought dang long and dang hard about this decision. They will have tried moderation literally thousands of times already. They’ll tell you their reasons when they’re ready to. You’re on a “need to know” basis rather than a “right to know.” The fear of the “why aren’t you drinking?” question often keeps people stuck inside their drinking.

So, just to be clear, we are in no way saying that AA’s 12 Steps need to be rewritten. We simply wanted to share this article that offers a “translation” of sorts for people who, for whatever reason, want or need something a little different.
